In this post you are going to learn how to create an Open Virtualization Appliance (ova).
These files are an appliance, that includes information used to describe the vm on virtual box or VMW.
This will help in the creation of the virtual lab, that will allow you to practice legally techniques used on a cyberattack. You will be able to build a custom toolkit on the OS, that will be used teach and practice penetration testing or vulnerability assessments.
I’m going to discuss a few reasons why building a custom ova is important to practice a skills. Whith a custome ova you will be able to use an OS that have what you whant to practice and learn about penetration testing or vuknerability analisys.
You can also use these ova to teach others, using the same tools you are using at the moment.
In these example I’m going to use Windows 10 as an example, however you can do this to other ISO therefore it can be applied to OS like Kali linux to practice or teach cyber security.
After you make the vm with the iso, follow thie steps to build the ova file and start training. In this example im using virtua box and Windows 10 ISO, in the virtual box go to file and press export to start the process of making the ova file.
After select the export option, select the vm that you will be using to make the ova file.
In this part you select the format that you want the ova file, I choose the 2.0, but it has ova 1.0 option.
Before you finish the settings of your ova, virtual box will give you the option to add more information to the ova file like the product name, vendor etc.
Depending on your system is the time that will take to finish the process to make the ova file.
After the process is done, you can distribute your custom version of that OS, that have the tool you will be using to learn or tech about a topic in specific.
This is perfect if you are teaching or practicing with a large group, because you can give them the vm image with the tools pre-installed that will be used during the training.
